Wheatgrass Shots: benefits, nutrition, side effects, and recipes

A wheatgrass shot, sometimes called wheatgrass jamba juice, is a small amount of juice, usually between 2 and 4 ounces, made from the tender shoots of the wheat grass plant (the same plant that wheat is made from). You drink it in one or two drinks, or mix it with other juice or a smoothie. Wheatgrass juice is quite bitter, so trying to sip it would be very unpleasant.

Wheatgrass Shot benefits

A wheatgrass shot will give you a lot of important vitamins and minerals, so many health experts recommend wheatgrass juice as a way to boost vitamin intake and as a natural cure for immune and digestive problems. A single wheatgrass shot contains as much of the vitamins and minerals as you would get from eating several platefuls of the plant. These vitamins and minerals include beta-carotene and vitamins E, C, and B12, as well as magnesium, potassium and other nutrients.

One shot of wheatgrass juice can help you quickly meet all of your vitamin needs for the day, and the juice also tends to give you a quick energy boost.

While there has not been much in the way of clinical testing on wheatgrass shots, its advocates say it helps with improved digestion, relief of constipation, lessening of menopause symptoms, blood stream detoxification. Regular use is also said to help prevent diabetes and heart disease.

Where to buy Wheatgrass Shots

Wheatgrass shots are sold made-to-order in many juice bars, and you can also purchase the prepackaged juice or powder in your local health foods shop. You can also find wheatgrass juice sold in bulk, at specialty grocers or natural wellness suppliers. Just make sure what you buy is pure, without any water, sugar, or other additives that might detract from the nutritional benefit.

If you decide to drink wheatgrass on a regular basis, you should consider making your own wheatgrass juice. You can purchase fresh wheat grass from health food stores, or you can grow it yourself. If you make it yourself, make sure to keep it covered and refrigerated and drink it within a day or two of juicing, to get the most out of it. You should also stir it or shake it before drinking.

To make your own wheatgrass juice, simply get your fresh wheat grass and put it through a wheatgrass juicer or blender. Do not use a regular juicer, as the wheat grass could clog up the juicer and break it. If you use a blender, make sure to strain the puree through a sieve, fine-holed colander or tea strainer.

If you find the taste of the wheatgrass shot too disgusting, you can mix it in a fruit smoothie or another blended drink. You can also buy wheatgrass powder or supplements, to get the benefits of wheatgrass without any of the taste. Here are a few recipes for wheatgrass smoothies.
